Trouble

The thigh pain was not a mere muscle strain
I think I knew this already, but once my antiinflammatories wore off on Wednesday's run I knew things were worse - couldn't run home due to the pain - a deep ache in the thigh

I organised an MRI and it showed a periosteal stress reaction on the femur - a Grade 1 injury where Grade 3 is a stress fracture. (pre-stress fracture you might say) There were no changes in the cortex (middle) of the bone. Classic scenario with altered gait fr4om the other knee and rapid increase in mileage after 4 weeks off.

To my surprise, the specialist thinks I can still run Boston. Without cortical changes this is unlikely to progress to a full stress fracture. I will need to markedly reduce my training from now, though, so the plan made with Mona is out the window. With 3 and a half weeks left it's a long taper keeping the legs turing over with minimal stress on the leg.

So aim will be back to just finishing, I'll be watching my pain closely, but hopefully I can still run Boston!!!!

Bugger!! With your base, as long as you can run, you will finish. My mileage was very low - 26 and 39km in the 2 weeks before Rottnest - it just takes the edge off any plans to race it.

Thanks for the write-up on Mona, It seems my coach has the same principle with emphasis on easy paced mid-week and weekend long runs. My taper was also very drastic, SW scheduled 4k on Mon, 4k on Tues, 5k on Thurs, and 5k on Sat during race week. Couldn't tell whether it was better than a normal taper or not.

ouch. duh! still the longer taper may still prove to be a blessing in disguise.

Once you are out there, you may surprise yourself. Remember what happened in the city to surf with your sub 3 last year.
Have to be in it to win it. Metaphorically speaking of course.

For my tilt at the Australian masters next weekend, I know I am going to get lapped heaps by Ray Boyd and paul Mitchell, and I am not as fit as I was for melbourne last year, but I am just going to go out there and soak up the experience, enjoy the race...the same principle may apply for you in Boston maybe, at least you can still run at this stage. make the most of the opportunity to be a part of a gold label top tier race, one of the great marathons of the world, as Sling mentioned in his Seoul race report...
enough rambling from me.
all the best.

Sorry to hear that, I was concerned when I hadn't seen anything on Strands for a few days after you painful quad on Wednesday. I suppose in one sense it takes the pressure off to race and you can just soak up the experience - hope it heals quickly and you can run Boston freely, if not fast...
